Bologna, Luca guide du jour
One winter’s day right after I moved to Italy, in the elegant Galleria Cavour, where the Bolognesi select their Chopard watches, Cucinelli sweaters, and Bottega leather goods, I approached a couple having a cappuccino and a cigarette below the arches. I asked them where was the most beautiful neighborhood in Bologna where I could take photos. The adorably elegant older gentleman, in a blue knee-length wool coat and cap, spoke only a few words of English, and at the time, my Italian was a work in progress. After a moment, he simply said: ‘Come, I’ll show you.’ Luca and I set off at a leisurely pace, leaving his wife in the cafe where she doubtless began to wonder when and if her husband might return. Thus began a beautiful Bolognese friendship. Luca and I have been pen pals ever since.
